Donkeys continue to play an integral role among farmers

Across different parts of the country, proper good rain has been recorded, resulting in most farmers that practice dry land farming (subsistence farming) to utilise the rain received. Farmers that grow maize, sorghum and pearl millet (Mahangu) as staple foods has been observed across the northern and north-eastern part of the country as they cultivate their land.

A great number of these farmers have stepped up their game when it comes to ploughing. They have opted to use modern tractors to plough their field. However, a great proportion still capitalises on ploughing with oxen and donkeys.

Kulaumone, a farmer who is situated in Omusati region, Outapi constituency stated that she still utilises and make use of donkeys to plough.

According to her, most of the cattle’s that she had for ploughing died during the droughts, luckily some of her donkeys survived and she is now utilising them to plough her field. She concluded that at the moment, she can`t afford to use a tractor as much of her budget was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Most farmers are hopeful and believe that they will be able to yield good results, if the rain so continue. Another farmer who has capitalised on ploughing his field with a tractor, said he have high hopes for the year provided that there won`t be any pests and diseases to attack their crops.
